INTRODUCTION

Biochemistry is a dynamic, rapidly growing field of science concerned with the study of chemical constituents of living cells and with the reactions and processes they undergo. The programme in the Department of Chemical Sciences, College of Science, Engineering and Technology is one of the Programmes that commenced at the inception of the University in 2007. The programme received National Universities Commission (NUC) full accreditation status in 2012 and has produced two sets of first graduates. The programme has witnessed progressive and orderly increase in student population, physical and teaching facilities and staff strength over the years.

PHILOSOPHY

The postgraduate programme in Biochemistry will provide graduates with knowledge and skills in specialized areas of biochemistry or multi mean to provide appropriate training for persons wishing to pursue academic career in research and teaching at tertiary level;

OBJECTIVES
The objectives of the Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree programme in Biocemistry are designed to:
(i) provide appropriate training for persons wishing to pursue academic career in research and teaching at tertiary level;
(ii) produce adequately trained professionals for food, pharmaceutical etc industries where there is increasing demand for biochemists with industrial orientation;
(iii) train research and development biochemists in industries and research institutes.
(iv) impart in the graduates, a diverse range of transferable knowledge, skills, aptitude and attitudes that are of value in biochemistry

General Admission Requirements
All candidates seeking for admission into all the Postgraduate Programmes of the Osun State University must possess a minimum of 5 credits, including English Language and four other relevant subjects, obtained at not more than two sittings, except as otherwise required. Candidates with ‘O’ Level Examination results obtained up till 2017 must present original copies of their certificates for screening as their Statements of Results and/or Result Slips are unacceptable. Submission of official academic transcript is a pre-requisite for admission.

Programme Details
Master of Science in Biochemistry (M.Sc. Biochemistry).
A minimum of B.Sc. Biochemistry Second Class (Lower Division) degree of Osun State University or any other university recognized by Senate of UNIOSUN. The programme is also open to graduates of Osun State University or any other recognized university in related disciplines such as Human Nutrition, Food Science and Technology, Physiology, Medicine, Biotechnology, provided that such applicants may be required to take and pass certain undergraduate courses in Biochemistry in addition to the minimum course units recommended for the M.Sc. degree programme as may be determined by the Department.
To be eligible for the award of the degree of M.Sc. (Biochemistry), a candidate shall offer and pass a total of 30 units of courses comprising 18 units of Compulsory courses, 6 units of Electives and 6 units of Research Thesis. Candidate’s thesis shall be orally defended in accordance with the regulations governing postgraduate studies.
